$0.00

“BRASILIA.” Amsterdam:  Arnoldus Montanus, 1671. Engraved map with later hand-coloring. (Image: 12  x 14 7/8'')

This beautifully engraved map depicts present-day Brazil and Uruguay with north oriented to the right. It is based on the cartography of Hessel Gerritsz and an earlier Blaeu map.

Topographical features are shown and towns, (including a very small Rio de Janeiro), names of landowners, Indian settlements in the north, waterways, islands and mountains are shown. Buenos Aires, Argentina is also located on the south side of Rio de la Plata. The interior is generally blank except for some conjectural river systems.

The Linea Aequinoctialis (equator) and Tropicus Capricorni (Tropic of Capricorn) are prominently displayed.

The elaborate title cartouche depicts European traders and natives.  The distance scale is ornamented with putti and scientific instruments. Ships and two compass roses adorn the seas.
