$0.00

“LES ISLES BRITANNIQUES...” Guillaume De l'Isle.  Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier, c. 1730. Beautifully engraved map with original hand coloring (cartouches later hand-coloring).  Reference: Shirley (British Isles to 1750), Mortier 1. (Image: 18 1/8 x 22 1/2'')

This attractive map is a reissue of De l'Isle's influential map first published in 1702.  It is based on the foremost authorities of the time:  John Speed for England and Wales, Pont for Scotland, and Petty for Ireland.

Countries are named with provinces and counties named and delineated.  Major cities, towns, mountains, waterways and islands are identified.

The bottom right shows the costs of Netherlands, Belgium and northern France.  At the upper right is the southern tip of Norway. The important fishing banks in the North Sea are prominently illustrated and De Kimmen ou le Borneus traces what is now know to the edge of the European continental shelf.

The note, lower left, explains that De l'Isle doubts the existence of the islands of Brasil and Assmanda, which appeared on earlier maps.

The large title cartouche incorporates mermen, fishing nets, sea birds and sea monsters and is surmounted by Neptune.  The lower cartouche contains five distance scales flanked by hunting dogs.
