This landmark and highly decorative map by Mercator first appeared in Part 3 of his atlas published in Duisburg in1595. In 1604 the plates were sold to Jodocus Hondius and the map was issued, without change, in the Mercator-Hondius Atlases published in Amsterdam until 1630.
The map depicts England, Scotland and Ireland. Topographical features are shown and cities, towns, islands, mountains, and water routes are identified. Counties are named in the tables to the right and left.
Gerard Mercator is considered the “greatest name in geographical science after Ptolemy” and produced the most accurate and current maps of his day. He was the first to choose “Atlas” as the name for a collection of maps. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Mercator’s maps were mostly original work - drawn and engraved by him. This handsome map reflects Mercator’s abilities, in beautiful Renaissance style, as both artist and scientist. (REF: Tooley Maps & Map-Makers).
