Original manuscript leaf from a manuscript Gradual. This beautiful four-line stave musical sheet is on animal parchment, written in liturgical gothic script. Five lines of music and text. (745 x 470mm 29 1/4 x 18 1/2'').

Italy, c. 1460-80.

One exceptional illuminated initial ''S'' in pink, green, orange, blue and white, with an interior of blue, green, orange and white - all on a heavily burnished gold ground. 

The illuminated ''S'' begins:  ''Surrexit Dominus...'' (He is risen, the One who was nailed to the Cross for us; the Lord has left the tomb, alleluia...).

Graduals contain the musical chants for the proper of the Mass: introits, graduals, tracts, alleluia, offertory and communion verses, and sequences for special feasts. They may also include chants for the ordinary of the Mass:  kyrie, gloria, sanctus, agnus dei and for the introductory ‘asperges’ rite.
