$0.00

“MAP OF NORTH AMERICA…”   New York: Daniel Burgess, c. 1846 from Smith’s Geography for Schools.  (Image: 10 1/4 x 8 1/4'')  Handsome engraved map with full original hand-coloring.

Although this map is dated 1839, it was actually published c. 1846 at the onset of the Mexican War, and colored to reflect Texas as part of the United States.  The population of the United States is based on the 1840 census which was just over 17 million.

The new state of Texas is delineated with its vast boundaries extending north along the Rio Grande to the Arkansas River (an area included within Texas until the Compromise of 1850).

Alaska is still part of Russia, noted as "Russian Possessions". Topographical features are shown and distances to various parts of the world are given. Major cities, towns, water routes (many with their lengths provided), mountains and Military Forts are located. Indian Tribes are also well located throughout the map.
