This map, with its highly decorative border, was published during the American Civil War. It depicts the world with countries in contrasting colors.
Alaska is shown as “Russian Territory” (not purchased by the U.S. until 1867).
The Antarctic Continent was still unexplored and only small portions of its coastline are delineated.
The chart at the top shows the comparative lengths of the world’s rivers. The spheres at the bottom show the world from a polar projection, by Land and Water, and the “North Polar Region”. Very detailed and attractive view of the world as it was known in the 1860’s!
