THE SACRAL TREASURE OF THE GUELPHS - 1985 CMA cat.

$12.99

Special issue of The Bulletin of The Cleveland Museum of Art, March, 1985, author Patrick M. de Winter. Octavo (9 x 7.5 inches), 160 pgs., 24 color plates, 170 b/w illustrations. Soft cover. Excellent, near new condition.

Superb reference for the art of the Middle Ages, particularly that of Saxony. The Guelph Treasure includes truly remarkable objects of sacred art: crosses, reliquaries, illuminated manuscripts, and other sculptural objects, nearly all dating from the Ottonian, Romanesque and Gothic periods. The majority of the extant treasure is in the Staatlichen Museum Berlin, with a significant number in the Cleveland Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. This special issue was the first to thoroughly examine the treasure and assess its artistic significance.
