$0.00

A fine original mezzotint engraving of “The Honourable Charles Francis Greville…” by Henry Meyer after a painting by George Romney. Produced in London, c. 1810.

In 1781 Emily Hart began to live with Charles Francis Greville, nephew of her future husband, Sir William Hamilton, British envoy to the Kingdom of Naples. In 1786 Greville sent her to Naples to be his uncle’s mistress in return for Hamilton’s payment of Greville’s debts. In 1791, she and Hamilton were married. She soon became mistress of Admiral Horatio Nelson.

George Romney (1734-1802) fashionable portrait painter of late 18th-century English society. His great success with his society patrons depended largely on his ability for dispassionate flattery. He too met Emily Hart (the future Lady Hamilton) in 1781 who exercised a strange fascination over him. His “divine Emma” appears in more than 50 paintings, in guises ranging from a bacchante to Joan of Arc.

Henry Meyer (1782-1847) was a painter and engraver of portraits. Several of his engravings were prominent subjects painted by George Romney.

Plate size is approximately 14 x 10 inches.
