$0.00

Fragment with Gothic rotunda text and illumination, from an original medieval manuscript service book (possibly a Pontifical) on animal parchment. (180 x 110mm – 7 1/8 x 4 ¼’’)

Italy, c. 1375-1400.

This cutting contains an exceptional historiated initial “Q” in pink, red, blue and green. Within the center of the initial is a miniature painting of St. Anthony (founder of monasticism). He is painted with a long white beard and wearing a brown woven tunic with wide sleeves, resting on a deep blue ground with delicate white penwork. The initial sits on a green ground with delicate white penwork.

St. Anthony is the patron saint of basket-makers, and invoked against the plague and St. Anthony’s fire.  His feast day is January 17th.  St. Anthony’s biography by Athanasius of Alexandria spread the concept of monasticism in Western Europe.
